FAQ

Q: Why should my child play rugby?
A:  Rugby is not your typical sport. The emphasis is placed more on the experience and the camaraderie of the game, and less on winning the game at all costs. Unfortunately, too many sports have placed the highest importance on winning, and have forgotten that playing is supposed to be fun.

Every player that participates in practice is going to play in the match. We do not focus on star players, and we strive to instill the "all for one, one for all" attitude that the game and the team are bigger than any individual.

Rugby is also a game that your child can take with them beyond their academic career. How many high school athletes go on to play at the college level? How many college athletes end up playing at the professional level? Rugby is played by men and women of all ages and shapes and sizes all over the world. Once you become a rugby player, you become part of a larger community that spans the globe and is fiercely loyal.

A: Rugby is a contact sport, and as with any contact sport, injuries will occur. Rugby players also wear little protective gear, so it is natural to assume the the risk of injury increases. However, studies have shown that the rate of injury is actually lower in rugby when compared to other sports, and some attribute this to the fact that players practice better technique because they don't have a helmet or other padding. A: Our coaches are all long-time members of the community that volunteer their time for the love of the game. Coach Reid  and Coach Chandler both played rugby in at the Citadel, while Coach Brogan played rugby at Clemson. They have been given the chance to teach the game to the young men of our club. All are registered with USA Rugby (to include background checks), and have been or are in the process of being certified through USAR's Coach Development Program.

A: No. The "CIPP" registration is a liability coverage for all participants at rugby events. It simply means that your child cannot be held responsible to any property damage or personal injury that occurs by his involvement in the event. In other words, if he runs into a fence when scoring the winning try (touchdown), the fence owner can't make him pay for the damages. Your child must have medical coverage to play.

A: We need parental involvement to be successful. The most successful teams in our league have the largest base of parental support.
* Support your child.
* Encourage them to give their best effort, and reassure them when they make a mistake.
* Come watch a practice - come watch a match.
* Bring snacks for after the game.
* Solicit donations from your friends and family and employer.
* Organize a fundraiser.
* Help drive the team to the game. Transportation is our single biggest challenge, and van rentals and activity buses cost money.
